How Developers Use AI Memory to Write Better Technical Documentation

The setup you do once
Good technical docs depend on a handful of things being consistent: how responses are shaped, what errors look like, what you call your core concepts. Store these once in a named memory and they're available to every documentation session from that point forward.

What to store for documentation
API conventions are the obvious starting point — response shapes, error formats, auth method, pagination. But there are three other things worth capturing that make a bigger difference than most developers expect.
Writing style. Formal or casual? Reference-focused or tutorial-focused? Do you explain concepts before showing code, or lead with code and explain after? Capture this explicitly so the AI writes in your voice, not a generic one.
Product terminology. Inconsistent naming is one of the most common doc quality problems. If you call it a "workspace" in one place and an "organization" in another, developers get confused. Store the canonical names for your core concepts — what they're called, what they're not called, and why.
Existing doc patterns. The best docs for a new endpoint are consistent with the docs you've already written. Store a few examples of well-written sections from your existing docs. When the AI has seen what good looks like in your context, it matches that quality rather than inventing its own style.
In practice
Without persistent memory:
"Write docs for the new payment endpoint."
AI: "Here's a general endpoint documentation template..."
You: "We use cursor-based pagination. Error codes are SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE. We write in second-person and lead with examples before explanation. Also, we call it a 'transaction', not a 'payment'..."
[Five minutes of context-setting before any actual docs get written]
With persistent memory:
"Write docs for the new transaction endpoint."
AI: "Here are the docs following your cursor-pagination pattern and error format. I used 'transaction' throughout and matched the tone from your existing reference docs. Let me know if the example request needs different auth headers."
The second session produces a first draft worth editing. The first produces a generic template you have to rewrite.
The consistency benefit
Documentation quality degrades over time when context lives only in people's heads. You write the auth section one way in January. Six months later, a different section describes auth differently. Neither is wrong — they're just not consistent.
When your conventions are in memory, every doc session starts from the same baseline. New sections match old ones. The error format described in your quickstart matches the error format in your reference docs. Terminology stays consistent across endpoints written weeks apart.
That consistency is what makes a documentation set feel like it was written by one careful author rather than assembled from parts.
Building documentation context over time
Named memories handle your conventions. For project-specific context — what's been documented, what's pending, what changed recently — use conversation memories as you work:
