When you trust MemNexus with your AI memories, you should have complete control over that data—including the ability to delete it permanently. Today, we want to be transparent about exactly what happens when you delete your account.

Why This Matters

Building AI applications with memory means trusting a service with personal data. You should never feel locked into that service because your data is held hostage. Whether you're moving to a different solution, no longer need the service, or just want a fresh start, deleting your account should be straightforward and complete.

How to Delete Your Account

Deleting your MemNexus account is entirely self-service. Here's how it works:

  1. Log in to the Customer Portal
  2. Navigate to your Profile page
  3. Scroll to the Account Settings section
  4. Click "Delete Account"
  5. Read the confirmation dialog carefully
  6. Type your email address to confirm (this prevents accidental deletions)
  7. Click "Delete My Account"

That's it. No phone calls, no support tickets required (though our team is always here if you need help).

You can also delete your account programmatically via our API—check the API docs for details.

The 7-Day Grace Period

When you request account deletion, your account enters a 7-day grace period before anything is permanently removed. Here's what this means:

During these 7 days:

  • Your account switches to read-only mode
  • You can still view all your memories, conversations, and data
  • You can export your data at any time
  • You can cancel the deletion with one click

Why 7 days? This grace period exists to protect you from accidental deletions. If you change your mind, made a mistake, or just need a bit more time to export your data, you have a full week to cancel.

A red banner will appear at the top of every portal page showing exactly when your data will be deleted and how many days remain. You'll also see a prominent "Cancel Deletion" button right on that banner.

What You Can Still Do During the Grace Period

Your account is in read-only mode during the grace period, which means:

You can:

  • View all your memories and conversations
  • Export your complete data archive
  • Cancel the deletion at any time
  • Browse your profile and settings

You cannot:

  • Create new memories
  • Update or delete individual memories
  • Create or modify API keys
  • Make any changes to your account

The most important thing: the export feature remains fully available. If you want to keep a copy of your data, you have 7 full days to download it before deletion.

How to Cancel Deletion

Changed your mind? No problem.

Just click the "Cancel Deletion" button on the red banner that appears at the top of the portal. Your account immediately returns to normal with full read-write access restored.

You can also cancel via the API if you initiated deletion programmatically.

One important note: If you created new API keys after requesting deletion, those will need to be regenerated. This is a security measure—if your account was compromised and you requested deletion for safety, we don't want to automatically re-enable potentially leaked keys.

What Happens After 7 Days

If you don't cancel, here's exactly what happens after the grace period ends:

Everything Gets Deleted

We permanently erase all your personal data from our systems:

  • Your name, email, and profile information
  • All memories and their content
  • All conversations and chat history
  • All extracted facts, entities, and patterns discovered from your memories
  • All narrative threads and artifacts
  • All API keys
  • Your payment information (deleted from our payment provider)
  • Your authentication identity (deleted from our identity provider)

This deletion happens in a single transaction—it's all-or-nothing. If any part fails, the whole operation rolls back and our team is alerted to investigate.

External Systems Are Cleaned Up

We don't just delete data from our own database. We also remove your data from external services:

  • Payment provider: Your customer record and payment information are permanently deleted
  • Authentication provider: Your authentication identity is permanently deleted

You Get Confirmation

Once everything is deleted, you'll receive a final confirmation email. At this point, the deletion is complete and irreversible.

What We Keep (And Why)

Transparency is important. Here's what we retain after account deletion:

Pseudonymized audit record: We keep a single record that contains:

  • A one-way hash of your user ID (cannot be reversed to identify you)
  • A one-way hash of your email (cannot be reversed to identify you)
  • The deletion timestamp
  • Counts of what was deleted (e.g., "142 memories, 87 facts")

This record contains no personal information and cannot be used to identify you. We keep it for legal compliance—specifically to demonstrate GDPR compliance if audited.

Server logs: Standard operational logs that auto-purge after 30 days. These may contain IP addresses and request paths but are retained briefly for debugging and security monitoring.

That's it. No hidden backups, no "soft deletes," no archived copies.

Re-Registration After Deletion

After your account is fully deleted, you're free to create a new account with the same email address if you ever want to return.

The new account will start completely fresh with no connection to your previous account. None of your old data will be accessible or recoverable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I export my data before deleting?

Yes! We strongly encourage this. You can export your complete data archive at any time—before requesting deletion, during the 7-day grace period, or any time while your account is active. The export includes all your memories, conversations, facts, and more in standard JSON format.

What happens to my subscription?

When you request account deletion, your subscription is automatically canceled. If you cancel the deletion during the grace period, you may need to re-subscribe manually—we don't automatically reactivate subscriptions in case the deletion was requested due to billing concerns.

Can I re-register with the same email?

Yes. After deletion is complete, the email address becomes available again. You can create a brand new account with the same email if you want to return to MemNexus later.

Is my data really gone forever?

Yes. Deletion is permanent and irreversible. We don't maintain backups of individual user data. Once the 7-day grace period passes and deletion completes, there is no way to recover your data—not even for us.

What if I accidentally requested deletion?

If you're still within the 7-day grace period, just click "Cancel Deletion" on the red banner at the top of the portal. Your account will immediately return to normal with all data intact.

If the grace period has already passed and deletion has completed, your data is permanently gone. You can create a new account, but you'll be starting from scratch.

What if I want my data deleted sooner than 7 days?

We understand that some users need immediate deletion for privacy or compliance reasons. If you need your data deleted without waiting for the grace period, contact our support team at support@memnexus.ai and request immediate deletion.

Our team can skip the grace period and process your deletion right away. Under GDPR, we're required to fulfill these requests within 30 days (45 days under CCPA), but in practice we typically process them within hours, not days.

Our Commitment to Privacy

At MemNexus, we believe:

  • Your data belongs to you
  • Deletion should be easy and complete
  • Transparency builds trust
  • Privacy is not negotiable

We built this deletion system to meet the highest standards—GDPR Article 17 (Right to Erasure) and CCPA compliance—but more importantly, because it's the right thing to do.

If you have questions about account deletion, data privacy, or anything else, our team is here to help at support@memnexus.ai.
